Corrective Exercises

Corrective exercises are the use of bodily movements and/or postures to restore desirable changes in diseased or injured tissues. The corrective exercises are movement strategies that minimize or eliminate compensation. Corrective exercises should precede more integrated exercises, because they can cue the patient’s motor system to respond in a more desirable way and assist in removing or improving biomechanical constraints. Use of specific exercises are used to correct deficiencies caused by trauma, inactivity, muscular imbalances, poor flexibility or biomechanical inadequacies.

Our corrective exercise plan is designed to help bring the body back into a good postural position. Our process exercise begins with static and movement assessments to determine which area(s) are out of balance and then recommends simple exercises including massage, stretching, and strengthening to undo the old habits and create new healthier movement patterns to help eliminate pain for good. Through the use of corrective exercises, we will reintroduce proper function to your body, which in turn restores correct structure. When your body stops compensating for imbalances you are able to move freely and your pain disappears. This allows you to have a higher quality of life, or yield better overall performance.

This comprehensive and consistent approach works to retrain muscles, restore joint function and prevent recurring injuries as well as doctor visits. When corrective exercises become necessary, they help maintain proper posture, improve lifting mechanics while helping to determine the “Do’s and Don’ts” related to certain jobs or daily activities. The effectiveness of the treatment protocol depends on the patient’s commitment to their therapeutic exercises and doctor’s recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Think of corrective exercises as bridging the gap between post surgery or post trauma therapy and traditional exercises. Alternatively, If you sustained an injury from overuse patterns or poor biomechanics, your physical therapist may include some corrective exercise work to create good movement patterns. However, if there is a traumatic event or a surgery, physical therapy would precede corrective exercise work. The purpose of corrective exercise in this particular situation is to ensure joint mechanics and technique are adequate before moving back into a traditional exercise program.

There is no such thing as universally perfect technique, all of our biomechanics and anthropometrics are completely unique. That being said, corrective exercise teaches us optimal movement patterns on a client specific basis. Common issues we see with our patients include:

Inability to effectively recruit (all) core musculature.

Poor cervical and thoracic movement patterns.

Inactive or poor posterior chain recruitment

Generally poor posture or movement (sitting/walking/running).

We address these problems on an individual level as no two people will require the same prescription.

When incorporated with chiropractic care, massage therapy or other therapeutic modalities – absolutely. Corrective exercise addresses the root of dysfunction in movement which is paramount. You could have incredible recovery tactics and professional care, but if you move poorly – the pain will always return. Corrective exercise addresses biomechanics which in turn leads to less pain, regardless of the activity or intensity level.
